Waxing Hair Removal, Public Hair Waxing at Home, Waxing Kit

Waxing one of the most popular ways of salon hair removal (it can be done at home, too, but is better left to the professionals). Waxing is the method of temporarily removing hair from the roots.  It leaves skin smooth for a long time, usually 3-8 weeks.  The hair grows back with tapered ends, so it feels softer and not prickly. During waxing hair removal strips of hair are plucked out by their roots. Waxing is known to be painful but effective, and many women and men keep going back for more!

If you can get past the pain of having liquefied wax poured onto your skin and then swiftly ripped away, then yo will no doubt love the week or two of fuzz-free skin that follows. However, regular waxing does slightly damage hair follicles, causing them to produce finer hairs. Another downside to waxing hair removal besides the pain is that it breaks hair off just below the skin, and this appears to promote ingrown hairs.

Brazilian Waxing

Brazilian Waxing is the type of waxing done by women on the bikini area.  Some prefer to leave a small line of pubic hair above the vulva.  This is known as the "G-Wax" or simply the "Brazilian".  Total elimination of hair is called the "Hollywood" or "Sphynx", or simply full bikini wax or FBW.  While this method is associated more with women, some men also engage in method.

Waxing Kit: Waxing can be carried out by a beautician, but there are also do-it-yourself kits available at chemists, so that you can try it yourself at home.

How Waxing Works

Waxing is done on Almost all areas of the body can be waxed such as eyebrows, face, bikini area, arms, back, abdomen, and legs.

Exfoliate the skin one or two days before the day of actual waxing to extend the life of your wax.  Take an Ibuprofen (a painkiller) before undergoing the procedure to minimize the pain.  It is not recommended for women who have their monthly period, since skin is more prone to bruising and is more sensitive to pain.

You can choose between a cold or hot wax.  Cold wax is suggested for people with sensitive skin.

Spread over thinly over the area.  A cloth or paper strip is pressed hardly over the skin, left for a considerable amount of time, and removed in a very quick motion against the direction of the hair growth.  Along with the hair, this removes also dead skin cells.

Waxing involves spreading a thin layer of heated wax on the unwanted hair and then covering the wax with a thin piece of paper or cloth which is then rapidly pulled off in the opposite direction of the hair growth. Hot wax is applied to the skin, and a strip of cloth or paper is pressed into the preparation and strip is then quickly pulled away, taking hairs with it. However, waxing can inflame sensitive skin and should not be used if you are prone to broken capillaries. There are two types of waxes: 'hot' and 'cold' (although cold wax is also slightly hot to the touch when applied).

waxing-hair-removalHot wax is a thick substance, generally used on sensitive areas, such as the face, bikini line and under the arms, while cold wax is much thinner and runnier, like syrup, and is usually used on body areas where the skin is less sensitive, such as the legs and arms. Ingredients include beeswax and paraffin.

Waxing Side Effects

As waxing plucks out the hair, regrowth is slower than with shaving. Side effects may include allergic contact dermatitis due to the colophony (a substance used in wax obtained from the sap of pine trees).

Do not wax when you are on the drug Roaccutane (used to treat acne), as the waxing does not only remove the hair, but also a layer of skin.

Before performing waxing on yourself, your best bet is to consult a physician if you're unsure about possible side effects or conditions that you suffer from.

When you choose a beauty salon for waxing hair removal, make sure that the therapists are qualified and that hygienic practices are followed (some salons still recycle their hot wax after use, although this practice has been strictly outlawed).

Waxing: Benefits

  • Waxing is best for removing hair in large areas.  It leaves the skin with a smoother feel and the hair grows back longer than any other method.  After repeated waxing, hair re-growth is less common, and eventually, hair will never re-grow.
  • Can cover larger areas relatively quickly i.e. arms, legs, back.
  • Can provide several weeks of hairlessness which is longer than shaving or depilatories.
  • Can be done at home.
  • Is relatively inexpensive when compared to other hair removal options.

Waxing: Considerations

  • Before another waxing session, there has to be a considerable amount of hair present.  The procedure is messy and cannot be conveniently done at home, especially bikini wax.  It is painful and skin can experience mild swelling after.  This method is best done professionally, hence, costly.
  • Some body parts should not be waxed like eyes, nose, ears.
  • Some body parts should be waxed only by a professionals.
  • Can be painful.
  • Waxing can be messy
  • Can irritate skin immediately after waxing.

Sugaring works in a similar way to waxing hair removal. A sticky, sugar based paste is painted onto the skin and then rubbed off, pulling hair with it.
