For those who got the haircut with the intention of simply leaving it straight but increasing the volume, adding a little moose or hairspray to the top of the head can increase the thickness of the roots and make the hair bounce better. For those who wanted a curl, the layered hairstyles make the curls appear thicker and bouncier. A small amount of moose or curl shaping putty can help to keep the hair tame while still keeping the volume and bounce. Highlights are common on layered hair, no matter if the hair is straight or curled.

Layered hairstyles can also help to draw attention to the areas of a face that one wishes to draw attention to. An example of this would be to cut the hair so that there is a hairline leading to the mouth or eyes. This can increase the likelihood that one focuses on a desired area rather than one that is less liked.
